An extensive 60-day journey around the Australian Coast was terminated days after the death of an older woman who was abandoned by the ship on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been hiking on the remote island with shipmates from the cruise ship, but broke off from the party for a rest. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back after some time after the ship staff became aware the woman was not present.

A large-scale search operation found her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the event, together with police and the state coroner.

Head of the cruise operator announced that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were told that the rest of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he added that passengers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the travel back of the travelers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an revised announcement, and said they had "provided a order to the Commander" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its coming back.

The liner initially left Cairns on 24 October, and was merely two days into the journey at the time of the 80-year-old's demise. Lizard Island was the first stop on the journey.

The daughter of the deceased woman said that her family was "surprised and saddened that the liner left Lizard Island after an organised excursion without my parent".

Through her comments, she described her mother as an "active octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a walking group.

"According to scant details we have been informed, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and basic judgment," she stated.

She further stated that she hoped the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the operator should have done that might have protected Mum's life".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and mum fell ill on the uphill trek," she explained.

"She was asked her to go back, alone. Then the boat sailed away, seemingly without performing a passenger count.
